Capoeira in Australia

Capoeira is slowly becoming more well known in Australia and Capoeira schools can be found in the majority of state capitals. Although this sport is rather small in Australia, many more people are taking it up each day.

For those of you who don’t already know, Capoeira is an art form that was created by slaves brought from Africa to Brazil. It combines elements of games, music, martial arts and dance. Capoeira is excellent for developing coordination, balance and fitness. Overall it encourages the development of self-esteem and confidence while helping to improve a person’s team skills. On top of this, Capoeira has a very strong cultural background.

Capoeira sparring contains many fluid movements ranging from extensive sweeps, kicks and head butts right through to less used striking moves like elbow strikes, punches, slaps and various body throws. The true origins of Capoeira are still under debate and historians have submitted many different theories.

Some historians believe that Capoeira is a uniquely Brazilian folk dance that contains improvised fighting movements. Meanwhile, others believe that capoeira is a battle ready fighting form that stems from ancient Africa. Historians are divided between these two theories with many followers on either side. The most popular explanation states that Capoeira is an African fighting style that was developed in Brazil.

Capoeira is a growing sport in many countries around the world and many more students are beginning lessons. In the 1970’s masters of Capoeira began to emigrate to various countries and with this came the spread of Capoeira. Once the sport got into the United States, a large portion of the stigma surrounding it was dissipated and the sport gained many new followers.

In today’s multicultural world, Capoeira schools have been set up in a lot of countries and schools are widespread across Australia. Students of Capoeira come from all kinds of backgrounds, and no longer is it practised by only African and Brazilian students. In fact, even in Asian countries like Japan, Capoeira is an emerging sport.

If you live somewhere in Australia and have an interest in learning Capoeira then a simple internet search will help you to locate your nearest Capoeira School. AS a beginner, I would suggest watching a class or two before you actually start participating or just do a little bit your first time round. This will help you to decide whether or not the sport is right for you.

Capoeira can be extremely taxing on the body and requires the use of a lot of the body’s muscles. However, it is excellent for building fitness and getting your body in shape. Australian Capoeira has come a long way from its beginnings and there are many great teachers in Australia. I would recommend heading along to a class to check it out for yourself.

Classes can be found in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as well as many other places. The majority of capoeira classes can be found on the East coast of Australia, but there are also classes in Adelaide and Perth.

WHAT IS CAPOEIRA?
Developed in the 1500's by the African slaves in Brazil, Capoeira is a unique art form that is African in origin and Brazilian in evolution. Introduced in the US in the mid-1970's, Capoeira has become one of Brazil’s top sports, second only to soccer. It could even be considered one of the country’s top exports, as groups have become firmly established around the world. In 2009, it was classified as a national cultural patrimony by the UNESCO.
Capoeira blends attack and defense with flowing, dance like movements, acrobatics, music, instruments and songs. These aspects marry flexibility, agility, strength, balance and coordination in addition to self-confidence. Capoeira is not only a sport but a dynamic, ritualistic and cultural form of self-expression which connects participants to Brazil's rich cultural history.
A mixture of body, mind, music and energy, Capoeira is a workout like no other that requires both mental and physical concentration. It is also a great social experience.
